Just out of curiosity — how many of you out there actually knew that there were nine Amityville movies? Anyone? I didn’t think so. The main reason why. IGN is the The Amityville Horror Collection on DVD resource with reviews, trailers, interviews, previews, news, wikis and release dates. The Amityville Collection - IGNContinued from Page 2. The Audio Much like the video, the audio on these discs is serviceable if not entirely impressive. Once again, the first film gets the best treatment. The Amityville Horror claims to have a "new, state of the art 5. Dolby Digital Surround track." I don't know if I'd go as far as calling it "state of the art," but it's not bad. It doesn't use the rear channels nearly as much as I'd have liked, but the dialogue is crisp and clear, and the low end sounds suitably ominous coming through the subwoofer. Amityville II gets the proverbial shaft with an astounding mono track. The best film in the series gets the lamest sound presentation. Nice job, MGM. Naturally, then, Amityville 3- D must get 5. Surround, right? Of course it does. Yet again, the disc doesn't really make much use of the rear channels, making me wonder why they even bothered. Dialogue is clear and centered, but the rest of the package is ho- hum. Score: 6 out of 1. The Amityville Horror Collection DVD Menu. Packaging and Extras. The Amityville Collection features four discs in standard Amaray casing with a box to hold the individual discs. I really like the packaging from an aesthetic standpoint, not because it's functional, but because each disc features the house on the cover looking ominous. Whether or not anything supernatural ever happened at 1. Ocean Avenue, there's no denying that the house is damn freaky looking, particularly with those two "eye" windows up in the attic. As far as extras go, this is a nice set. The Amityville Horror disc features not only the film, but a new documentary entitled For God's Sake, Get Out! Amityville II: The Possession(1982) Movie Review - Duration: 15:09.Margot Kidder and James Brolin reminiscing about their experiences on the film. If that's not enough, there are radio spots, a trailer, and a full- length commentary from parapsychologist Hans Holzer (who's written several books about the Amityville house). Holzer's commentary is a snoozer; I'd rather hear from filmmakers about the movie than his dull take on the paranormal. James Brolin has another bad hair day. Amityville II, naturally, gets nothing in terms of extras except for a trailer. Neither does Amityville 3- D. The fourth disc in the set is Amityville Confidential, which features two episodes of The History Channel's show History's Mysteries detailing the Amityville phenomenon.
The first deal with the alleged haunting and why it may have happened, the second deals with whether or not the whole thing was a hoax. Unfortunately, both documentaries are mostly fluff pieces. George and Kathy Lutz give their first interview in decades and no one asks them a single hard question. I wanted Mike Wallace interviewing these people. What's most disappointing is that the documentary answers no questions and only serves to drive home the point that everyone involved in the affair is completely unreliable as a witness because they all profited from it. The only person with any real integrity in the whole mess is the newscaster who spent the night in the house covering a "meeting of psychics" to find out what was going on. He didn't see anything unusual at all. George and Kathy Lutz today. Other people quoted, like self- proclaimed "demonologists" Ed and Lorraine Warren and Ronny De. Feo's lawyer, have attempted to make money off the Amityville story, casting doubt on their reliability. Even more disappointing still is that in the face of all the mystical hokum tied to the house, many people lose sight of the fact that a legitimate tragedy happened at 1. Ocean Avenue. An entire family was murdered by one of their own. That's far more frightening than flies on a windowpane or hearing spooky noises in the basement. Finally, the disc has a five- minute feature on the upcoming remake. I'm generally opposed to horror film remakes (because films like Texas Chainsaw and Dawn of the Dead are already great films that don't need a new interpretation) but since The Amityville Horror is of such dubious quality anyway, I couldn't care less if they remade it. This is one of those instances where a remake is actually an okay thing. Last but certainly not least& #Array; the disc includes a voucher for a free ticket to a screening of the remake. At least this way I won't have to go to a press screening or shell out my own money. Score: 7 out of 1. Conclusions It's really hard to talk about the Amityville movies without getting into all the real- life stuff surrounding them. And in a way, that's the only reason there's an Amityville series to begin with. The films, with the exception of the second one, aren't particularly good or scary. It's only the fact that we all wonder just what really did happen inside the walls of 1. Ocean Avenue all those years ago that keeps us coming back.
